World Environment Day…

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Climate Change is the theme for this years World Environment Day which takes place tomorrow, June 5th.  To help raise awareness the Environment Agency have set up a website questionnaire which is challenging people to ask themselves what they are doing personally to tackle climate change and what one extra thing could we do to make a difference.

Across the country, there will be events taking place to mark the occassion so check local press for any details. Here in London, it’s Sustainability Weeks with all sorts going on tomorrow and right up until June 17th. Events range from organic food fairs, community clean up days and business seminars to one of my favourites though I’m far too shy to attend, the Naked Cycle Ride across town, an annual outing which also takes place in Brighton, Manchester, Southampton and York. For a full listing of London dates check out the Love London website which also includes a list of eco tips for tackling climate change.

I Count….

ECOutlet - Climate Change Rally

I Count is the campaign of the Stop Climate Chaos coalition who are calling on the UK Government to take the necessary action at home and abroad to prevent global warming from exceeding the widely accepted danger threshold of 2 degC.
Almost everyone I know has at one point voiced dismay at the size of the effort involved in tackling climate change and if that rings a bell and you’ve found yourself thinking what can I do to make a difference? ….signing up to the I Count website is one more small way you can do your bit. The site features a ‘My actions’ area which includes an opportunity to send an email to David Milliband in response to the governments draft Climate Change Bill.

The email is calling on the government to amend the current draft to increase the long-term CO2 reductions target from 60% to 80% by 2050. I Count wants shipping and aviation which are currently not mentioned to be included in the bill and are also requesting yearly targets rather than 5 year carbon budgets which give elected parties the opportunity to pass the blame for failing to meet those targets on previous governments.
All good points and if this is something you feel in agreement with, why not take a few minutes out and sign up

ECOutlet - cowplane

In the last 50 years, global meat production has increased 5-fold and the amount of meat eaten per person has doubled.  Methane is the second most significant greenhouse gas and the 1.5 billion cows on the planet are one of the greatest emitters.

Their grassy diet and multiple stomachs cause them to produce methane, which they exhale with every breath.  Each cow is responsible for around 400 litres per day!  Methane is 23 times more powerful a greenhouse gas then CO2 and meat production is 20 times more carbon intensive than vegetables.  In fact, livestock is responsible for 18% of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming, more than cars, planes and all forms of transport put together.

The Eat Less Meat campaign is not a call to turn veggie or vegan.  It simply aims to raise awareness of how you can enjoy healthier eating and help the planet and animals too.
