UK Aware 2010

Now in its third year, UK Aware has become the must visit event for anyone seeking out new ways to lead a green and ethical lifestyle.  This year the event takes place on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th of April at Londons Olympia Two with over 15,000 green-minded folk anticipated to attend.

I think we cover a lot of bases here at ECOutlet when it comes to ideas for a greener lifestyle but I’ll hold my hands up and admit that UK Aware does pack them in and on both occasions in the last two years were I’ve gone along I was really impressed with the range of exhibitors and the number of events taking place over the day.  You can easily spend several hours at the event taking in a couple of guest speakers, browsing the exhibitors and learning more about home renewable technologies.

Visitors to the event this year can expect to see over 50 guest speakers, hundreds of eco exhibitors, a massive clothes swap, GreenTech zone as well as a kids interactive area.

Tickets for the event will be £15 on the door but ECOutlet have managed to secure some reduced price £6 tickets for any of our customers looking to pop along. To obtain your discounted £6 tickets simply click through the link below.

Eco Design Christmas Fair

For Londoners and anyone else visiting the capital on the weekend of Dec 13th and 14th please come along and pay a visit to this year’s Eco Design Christmas Fair which is taking place for the first time at the Boiler House in the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane.

Now in its fifth year, the Eco Design Fair brings together a collection of designers and small businesses whose work is centred on sustainability and kindness to the environment.

We’ll be there with a stall on the Saturday and Sunday so pop along and say hello if you’re a customer.  We’ll be bringing along lots of Christmas gift ideas and alongside us will be loads of other small traders with plenty of unique and unusual eco goodies to check out.

Eco Fashion and Design Fair

Girls have all the fun….well last night they did when I popped along to the Eco Fashion and Design Event at the Candid Arts Centre in Islington.  To be fair, I’m not exactly clued up on fashion but having attended all the previous Eco Design Fairs I went along to support the event and maybe check out if there was anything of interest for a vintage wearing 30-something bloke.

Not surprising really, my tastes weren’t exactly catered for but for a full run down of designers who exhibited and some ideas for your ethical summer wardrobe check out the Eco Design Fair website.  I stayed on for the fashion show which you know had lovely clothes on lovely models but it was the grand finale that had everyone grinning and whooping with a display of the latest range of underwear from Pants for Poverty, the fair-trade organic and sweatshop free underwear label.  Don’t worry I can personally vouch they look just as good on without the six-pack stomach!

David Cameron and The Lorax

We kicked off the ECOutlet Christmas tour last weekend with the Green Christmas Fair in Notting Hill and who should come a visiting, none other than the Right Honourable MP David Cameron!

It seemed amazingly apt that he choose to buy from us a copy of The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. For anyone whose not aware of the story, you can follow this link to watch Part 1 on youtube.
The Lorax is a fable chronicling the rise and fall of a tree destroying business which ultimately decimates the environment for financial gain. Sound familiar?

We hear a lot about Mr Cameron’s green credentials, my personal favourite is his car full of paperwork which followed him to work on his bicycle each day…he back-tracked on that one claiming he cycled for pleasure and not the environment….strange!

But I mus’nt be negative…bad shopkeeper….think positive. At the end of The Lorax a boy is handed the last hope, the seed of the Trufulla tree. Could Mr Cameron be that child holding the power to do good? Could The Lorax inspire him to really put environmental issues before financial ones, well let’s hope so…

Xmas Eco Fairs

It’s our first Christmas in business and it’s already shaping up to be a busy one. In addition to keeping everything ticking over smoothly here on the website, we’ll also be out and about doing the rounds at lots of Christmas fairs and markets over the next few weekends.

The fairs are mostly London based and start this coming Sunday with the first Green Christmas Fair in Notting Hill. The organisers have even gone to the trouble of making a great little promo video for the event which you can view as the top video on the right hand column for the next few days.

We’ll also be visiting Northampton and Brighton so if you’re in the vicinity of any of the following locations come along as they all look like pretty good opportunities to pick up some unusual and eco-friendly Christmas gifts and are a great way of supporting lots of small traders.

The ECOutlet Christmas tour is as follows:

Hopefully see some of you there!

Organic Fortnight…

ECOutlet - Organic Fortnight

The Soil Association Organic Fortnight runs for the next couple of weeks from Sep 1st to the 16th. It’s an opportunity to celebrate all things organic with events and organic food promotions taking place all over the country. This year the theme is ‘Wake up to an Organic Breakfast’ with everyone being encouraged to start the day the organic way. Organic food farming uses around 30% less energy so it’s better for us and better for the planet too.

The celebrations kick off with the Organic Food Festival which takes place this weekend in Bristol. As well as a very large Organic food and drink market at the event there’s loads of other stuff going on including a demonstration kitchen, talks and tastings, a fashion show and relaxation zone, a kids zone and an organic bar…so something for everyone there. If you can’t make it down to Bristol, check out the Soil Associations listings page for events taking place near you.

Not Live Earth

Whilst Madge was prancing around a 100 ft stage at Live Earth on Saturday, ECOutlet were strutting their stuff at a different kind of gig to raise awareness of energy consumption.

The Divine Agency’s pedal power concert at the Southwark Green Fair in South London consisted of three bicycles powered by an amp, an electric guitar and a mic. The audience were treated to such delights as a song about steam power, the wheel and one ladies bizarre prayer to Rufus Wainwright all of which went down well and go to show you don’t need a carbon footprint the size of Wembley Stadium to have fun!

ECOutlet at Kingston Green Fair

It was probably the wettest May Bank Holiday weekend in my memory at least but that did’nt put off the crowds attending the Redbridge and Kingston Green Fairs. We met hundreds of people over the course of Sunday and Monday and had a great time telling everyone all about ECOutlet.
It’s the Camden Green Fair this coming Sunday in Regents Park, London. This time last year we went along when ECOutlet was still just a idea in our heads, we even talked about how good it would be to have a stall at the event so we’re very excited one year later to be achieving that. If you’re around in London, the event promises to be a great day out…..my crystal ball, the BBC 5 day forecast is a little fuzzy on the details but just in case don’t let the rain put you off coming down!

ECOutlet goes to the fair….

ECOutlet

We’re breaking free from the desks this Friday and having a works day out….well, more of a busman’s holiday really as we will be packing our eco bags and heading down to the London College of Fashion to show off our wares.  For the first time ever, the Eco Design Spring Fair will be taking place at the College which is just around the corner from Oxford Street.  If you’re in the London area this is a great chance to see what sustainable and fair trade design is all about and products on display will include clothing, footwear, bags, belts, ties, knickers, jewellery, baby wear, maternity wear, knitwear as well as a load of home accessories.

It will be our first time attending a fair so we’re very excited and we’ll be bringing along our range of eco-accessories for everyone to have a look at in the flesh. You can touch them, smell them, we’ll even let you try them on if you promise not to do a runner.

The fair is taking place between 10am and 4pm at the Rootstein Hopkins Space, London College of Fashion and more info on the exhibitors and directions are available on the Eco Design Fair website.  As part of Green Week at the College, the event also includes free film screenings taking place throughout the day so you can make a whole afternoon of it if it takes your fancy!
