Change your world….

CHange your world

Granted I’m a little bit slow in writing about this but better now than not at all…The people at Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity launched an initiative a few days ago called Change Your World – One mile at a time. The idea being that for one journey this week 1-7th July, everyone leaves the car at home and swaps it for something that’s better for the planet.

Apparently a quarter of all car journeys are under 2 miles and over half are under 5 miles…perfect distances for walking and cycling! If every driver were to adopt the same approach and reduce car use by one journey a week the result would be 10% less traffic on the roads and a significant reduction in the UK’s CO2 emissions.

You could always go one step further and cut down even more on car use by car sharing regularly. This is something I did many years ago when my job was based in the middle of nowehere and I was forced to own a car to get to work every day. I ended up being good friends with my fellow car sharer though top tip for anyone considering it, make a rule first about acceptable car music as Craigs choice of Jazz FM day in and out was just a little bit too much for me to cope with.

If car sharing is something of interest then sites like Liftshare which has over 175,000 members and Carplus are a good resource for finding travel companions in your area. Car sharing not only resulted in me being less dependent on my own car but also cut my travel costs considerably every month so if you’re in a similar position it comes recommended.

Parking referendum..

ECOutlet - Parking referendum

Should the cost of a resident’s parking permit depend on how much the car pollutes? That’s the question posed to us by my local council this week who have given us until Monday to vote in the Islington parking referendum.

Following the lead set by Richmond council in South London, Islington’s proposal is to increase the annual parking fee for the most polluting cars from £95 to £200 a year. Both sides of the argument have some valid points, those opposed to the change mention that while bigger cars may pollute more per mile, if they are driven less then the overall CO2 emissions could in fact be less than a smaller, less polluting car…fair enough.

Tax increases might not be a perfect solution to the problem but if they help persuade more people who have to drive to choose a more efficient model and reward those who make more environmentally friendly choices then that’s a good thing and probably the best way the local council can influence behaviour on this matter. If the change is implemented it should result in less CO2 emissions in the borough over time and that at the end of the day is the most important point and what we should all be striving for.

On a different note, I also cycle a lot and only last week I came so close to being knocked off my bike by an SUV driver (his fault!!) that as a pedestrian and cyclist it’s not just from an emissions point of view I’d like to see less of them on our town roads it’s also from a safety aspect as had their been a collision, I dont think my chances would have been too good.

Butt Naked Bikers…

Naked Bikes

Maybe it was the sunny weather and my sweaty t-shirt sticking to my back but whatever the reason I was very envious watching those carefree enough to bare all today on London’s Naked Cycle Ride.

Every time I’m out and about on my bike it feels like a liberating experience so I can only imagine how good it must have felt to be cycling around the Capital’s landmarks wearing nothing but a big grin. I’ve mentioned before I’m too shy to join in but having seen how much people were obviously enjoying themselves today I think I’ll be signing up this time next year.

There was also a serious side to today’s event which was to raise awareness of our dependency as a nation on oil whilst promoting the environmental benefits of cycling and the vulnerability of cyclists in traffic at the same time. Respect to the naked bicycle people, you all did a great job!

Eco Holidays

We’re all becoming more aware of the impact travelling can have on the environment so websites such as Eco Travelling are a great source of information with plenty of food for thought as we enter the holiday season. The site offers a wealth of advice to help ensure the carbon footprint of your next trip is as small and ethical as possible with over 70 articles currently available and more being added regularly by a team of experts.

Featured tips and advice include articles on air travel such as the performance differences between aircrafts and a balanced discussion on the problems of long-haul flights. It don’t stop there though with most forms of transport covered including eco friendly driving tips, bus vs train, cycling and boating as well as advice on low impact holidays.

Another site also worth a look at if you’re planning a long weekend break or journeying into Europe over the coming months is The Man in Seat Sixty-One. The site is a comprehensive resource showing you how to travel comfortably and affordably overland to places where you might have thought air travel was the only option. It covers most global destinations and includes very handy timetables and fares for rail travel across Europe. As is pointed out, there’s more to travel than the destination, part of the fun can be in the journey!

tfl bike ad

June 16th sees the start of National Bike Week, a nationwide campaign which aims to encourage more people to cycle more often. Here in the capital, Ken Livingstone recently announced some impressive figures showing a rise in popularity and investment in cycling. Since 2000, the number of cyclists in London has risen by 83% while investment has risen from £5 million in 2000 to £36 million in 2006/2007.
The Press Release coincided with the launch of Transport for London’s latest TV advertising campaign ‘You’re better off by bike’ which is hoping to encourage even more people to take to their bikes this summer.
The ad is getting a fair amount of TV play down here and it’s really nicely done so I thought I would stick it up on here for everyone’s viewing as the message is the same wherever we are. With the warm weather nearly here, it’s perfect timing to think about leaving the car at home and cycling to work for a change. To view the ad, just click play on the top right-hand video.

finn mac cool….

ECOutlet - Giants Causeway

Long ago, a giant called Finn MacCool lived on the north coast of Ireland. From here he could look across the narrow sea of Moyle to Scotland where another giant, Benandonner, Finn’s greatest rival lived. Finn decided to invite Benandonner to Ireland in order to settle their rivalry in a decisive battle. As no boat big enough to carry the giant existed, Finn went about building a causeway of huge stones across the water so the Scottish giant could make his way over.

As big ben approached, Finn realised to his horror that his opponent was a much larger and more fearsome rival than he anticipated. He fled home and asked his wife Oonagh for advice. Quick-thinking Oonagh disgused Finn as a baby complete with nightgown and bonnet and placed him in a huge hastily made cradle. When the Scottish giant arrived, Oonagh brought him in for a cup of tea, pleading with him not to wake Finn’s sleeping child. Looking at the massive baby laying asleep, Benandonner took off saying that if this was the child, he had no desire to meet the father. He fled back to Scotland, ripping up the Causeway behind him, terrified that Finn might follow him home.

In 1986 Finn’s Causeway was made into a World Heritage site and more recently, Northern Ireland was voted by the Lonely Planet as one of the must-see destinations for 2007. The scenery is breathtaking and to see exactly how many places of interest there are to visit, check out the Discover Northern Ireland site. We followed up our trip to the Causeway with a visit to Portrush beach which is beautiful and was most appreciated by my two smiley nieces!

ECOutlet - Cycle Lane

For anyone considering taking up cycling over the next few months, my top tip would be to acquaint yourself with the back routes. Avoiding busy main roads cuts down on journey time and with substantially less traffic is much safer.

The Sustrans website includes free cycle maps for all areas on the regional pages of the ‘Get Cycling’ section of the website.  If you live in London, TFL have published 19 cycle guides to find the best cycle routes around the capital and they can be ordered free here.

Dirty weekend in Bath!

Bath Spa

We just got back from spending a couple of nights in Bath as a treat following the launch of ECOutlet.  Our saturday morning detox visit to the Thermae Bath Spa, the only place in the UK where you can bathe in natural hot waters, hit the spot and helped recharge the batteries.

The apparently beneficial properties of the natural spa water weren’t exactly to our tastes at the Roman Baths but we did score well when it came to food.

Demuths is a vegetarian restaurant based just around the corner from the Abbey and we enjoyed some proper hearty food in a cosy chilled out atmosphere.  Getting to Bath from London was very straight forward and stress free, it took less than 90 minutes on the train.  Our CO2 emissions for the journey amounted to about 20kg each which is a vast improvement compared to flying off somewhere for the weekend!  If you’re looking for short break ideas, Bath definitely comes highly recommended from us.
